The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda have come to a peace agreement that held its ground with the help of Donald Trump. Perhaps because of this agreement, the US has secured substantial mineral rights in the process. It is said that this deal will be an important step in ending a long-term conflict that has led to the deaths of six million people. Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, referred to it as “an important moment after 30 years of war”.
Earlier, on Friday, President Trump had stated that he was able to broker a deal for “one of the worst wars anyone’s ever seen”. According to him, he was able to bring them together and sell it. Plus, the US would be getting a lot of mineral rights from Congo.
Despite this, there is a great deal of uncertainty regarding the deal as the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group, which is heavily involved in the conflict, has suggested that the agreement will not be binding on them. The group wasn’t directly involved in the previous peace negotiations.
