Dominican Republic nightclub disaster: Roof collapse leaves at least 79 dead | Global Updates

At least 79 people have died and over 160 have been injured after the roof collapsed at a nightclub in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, according to Juan Manuel Mendez, the director of the Centre of Emergency Operations. Rescue efforts are ongoing at the Jet Set club, with Mendez reporting, “We continue clearing debris and searching for people tirelessly. We’re prioritizing three areas because we’re hearing some sounds.” The reason for the collapse remains unclear.

Among the fatalities is Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the northern Montecristi province, and Octavio Dotel, a former MLB pitcher with a 15-year career.

Dominican singer Rubby Perez, who was performing when the roof collapsed, has been injured. His manager, Enrique Paulino, mentioned the tragedy unfolded quickly and compared the incident to an earthquake.

President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, expressed deep regret over the incident and confirmed relief agencies are working tirelessly.
