Galatasaray has accused the head coach of Fenerbahce, Jose Mourinho, of making “racist statements” against Turkish people and intends to pursue criminal proceedings against him.
The Turkish league leaders also plan to file complaints to governing bodies UEFA and FIFA concerning the “derogatory” remarks, which they claim were made after Monday’s 0-0 draw with the top team.
Following the match, the former Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Real Madrid manager commented on the behavior of the Galatasaray bench, stating they were “jumping like monkeys” in response to an early challenge.
Mourinho also expressed approval for the decision to bring in Slovenian official Slavko Vincic to officiate the game, suggesting it would have been a “disaster” if a Turkish official had been in charge.
The referee, who officiated last season’s Champions League final, was brought in by the Turkish Football Federation following several recent controversies in Turkish Football.
‘Clearly inhumane rhetoric’
A statement from Galatasaray declared, “Since the beginning of his tenure in Turkey, Fenerbahce manager José Mourinho has continuously made derogatory remarks towards Turkish people. Today, his language has escalated from merely immoral to clearly inhumane rhetoric.
“We hereby formally announce our intention to commence criminal proceedings against José Mourinho for his racist statements and will submit official complaints to UEFA and FIFA.
“Furthermore, we will closely monitor the stance of Fenerbahce – an institution that claims to uphold ‘exemplary moral values’ – in response to the disgraceful behavior of their manager.”
The statement was published on the club website under the heading: “Say no to racism.”

Earlier this season, Mourinho received a one-match ban and a fine of nearly £15,000 for his reaction to Fenerbahce’s 3-2 Super Lig win at Trabzonspor.
He was charged with “unsportsmanlike behavior towards opposing team fans” and “devaluing Turkish football and… discrediting the impartiality of referees and other match officials” during a confrontational post-match interview.
