In Argentina, violent clashes erupted between retired individuals, backed by football fans, and police, resulting from anger over the austerity policies of President Javier Milei’s government. The demonstrations in Buenos Aires, which initially began peacefully, escalated when large groups of Boca Juniors fans arrived, bringing flags and chants in support of the retirees.
The pensioners, who are particularly affected by the government’s cuts and inflation, have been joining weekly protests demanding higher pensions. This time, supporters from various football clubs, including Rivals, participated, creating an unusual alliance.
The protests turned violent when police formed a barrier to prevent the demonstrators from reaching the congressional building. Riot police responded with high-pressure water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets, leading to nearly 90 detentions and 15 hospitalizations.
Demonstrations by retired individuals against President Milei’s policies have been ongoing, with the latest being the most intense. The government has been trying to reduce spending and control inflation, which has led to decreased pensions and increased discontent among the population.
Security Minister Patricia Bullrich has warned that while freedom of expression is supported, law and order must be maintained, particularly concerning the organized groups of football fans known as “barras bravas” in Argentina and Brazil.
