Former mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor expressed his desire to become the next president of Ireland and mentioned that he would put the EU Migration Pact to a referendum if elected.
McGregor, who met with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on St Patrick’s Day, stated on social media that he strongly opposes the measure but acknowledged that it is not up to him or the government to decide. Instead, he emphasized that it is the choice of the Irish people.
In a social media post, McGregor urged the people of Ireland to vote for him and have their voices heard. In the accompanying picture, he posed with a young child while wearing a green baseball cap branded with the slogan “Make Ireland Great Again.
During his White House visit, McGregor criticized Ireland’s stance on immigration, claiming that the country was on the verge of losing its Irishness due to the “illegal immigration racket.”
The visit and comments made by McGregor in Washington drew sharp criticism from Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin who said the remarks were “wrong, and do not reflect the spirit of St Patrick’s Day, or the views of the people of Ireland”.
