Irish MMA Star Conor McGregor Pulls Out of Presidential Contest | International News

Mixed martial artist Conor McGregor has declared he is stepping back from his bid for the Irish presidency.

“After a thoughtful period of consideration, and following conversations with my family, I am stepping down from the presidential race,” he disclosed through a social media update.

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but it feels right for this moment.”

McGregor had originally announced his candidacy for the Irish presidency in September of last year.

He had been scheduled to speak at meetings with Dublin City Council and Kildare County Council, in an effort to secure a place on the ballot for October’s election.

To have qualified, he would have needed endorsements from either 20 members of the Irish parliament or four local authorities.

McGregor asserted his commitment to running for office was earnest, and he was “truly grateful” for the “support and encouragement” he received.

He criticized the outdated election rules in Ireland’s constitution, calling them restrictive and affirming they disproportionately favor establishment candidates.
