The hearing regarding the Menendez brothers’ bid for resentencing will proceed as scheduled on Thursday, a judge has decided. In 1989, Lyle and Erik Menendez were sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home. At the time, Lyle was 21 and Erik was 18 years old. George Gascon, the former Los Angeles district attorney, requested last year to have the brothers’ sentence reduced to 50 years to life, which would have made them eligible for parole since they were under 26 when the crime occurred. However, his successor, Nathan Hochman, has opposed the resentencing request. Despite Hochman’s opposition, Los Angeles County Superior Court judge Michael Jesic stated that the hearing is still on, and that all arguments presented can be raised during the resentencing hearing. The brothers have consistently maintained that they acted in self-defense after suffering years of abuse by their father. Their case has been thrust back into the spotlight by a Netflix drama series and subsequent documentary, with some family members calling for their release.
