Sir Keir Starmer is scheduled to address a conference today focusing on the crackdown of illicit migration.
The UK prime minister is anticipated to urge nations not to rival each other regarding the despicable trade of human smuggling.
Representatives from 40 countries will convene in London for the two-day conference, where Starmer is expected to call for international cooperation against people smuggling syndicates, the same way that nations work together to fight terrorism.
Ministers will declare that approximately £33m will be allocated to disrupt people-smuggling networks and increase prosecututions, the Times newspaper reports.
Starmer will also advocate for unity among the nations attending the conference, including France and the US. He commented, “This vile trade exploits weaknesses in our institutions, pits nations against each other and profits from our inability to come together politically.”
The Home Office asserts that the conference will yield “concrete outcomes” for countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and North America.
Before the conference, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper mentioned on “Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips” that the government is considering other nations to process asylum seekers, emphasizing that the immigration issue is a global problem.
Alex Burghart, a Conservative shadow minister, suggested that the Labour government made an error by discontinuing the Rwanda deportation scheme upon taking office, which he believed was an effective deterrent for individuals making the perilous journey across the English Channel in small boats.
