The mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, has announced that a curfew will be in effect overnight to “halt the vandalism and prevent looting.” This curfew will apply to downtown areas of the city from 8 PM to 6 AM local time (4 AM to 2 PM UK time) and is likely to continue in the coming days.
A local state of emergency has been declared, following the looting of 23 businesses on Monday night. Ms. Bass also noted the widespread presence of graffiti, resulting in significant damage to properties due to the protests.
Jim McDonnell, the Police Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, stated that the curfew is a necessary measure to safeguard lives. On Tuesday alone, the Police made 197 arrests, and McDonnell warned of detentions for anyone caught violating the curfew without a valid reason.
