As Latvia’s president, Edgars Rinkevics called for absolute introduction of conscription across European nations, stating militarily the continent was “quite weak.” In an interview with Sky’s “Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips,” he argued countries should hike defense spending against the backdrop of fluctuating ties with the US.
Latvia reinstated conscription for men in 2023, increasing its defense expenditure to 4% of GDP. In Mr. Rinkevics’ view, his country’s decisions could serve as a precedent for other European nations responding to current global events.
“We see what’s happening globally. The path we’ve chosen— other European countries should tread it too.”
“While people appreciate strong reassurances, it’s imperative that other European governments act to bolster our collective strength as a region,” Rinkevics said.
“Failure to adhere to Article Five would signal the end of NATO,” he asserted. The Baltic states, which include Estonia and Lithuania, serve as a critical test for NATO.
Any increase in “the overall presence” along borders with Russia would be crucial due to “increasing risks.”
In light of recent policy shifts from the US toward Russia and Ukraine, Mr. Rinkevics suggests maintaining diplomatic efforts to press Russia during peace talks on Ukraine.
While acknowledging the US request for Europe to increase its defense spending for NATO allies, he also pushed for Europe to focus on its own strength and bolster its military capabilities.
As nations on NATO’s eastern flank bordering Russia, the Baltic countries stand as some of NATOs highest defense spenders per GDP. They’re also among Ukraine’s loudest supporters in Europe, sounding the alarm for years about President Putin’s threats.
