According to North Korean and Chinese state media, Kim Jong Un will attend a significant military parade in Beijing next week to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, where he will join Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin.
Mr Putin’s attendance had already been confirmed, and both he and Mr Kim will be among the 26 foreign leaders in attendance, with no leaders expected from the US or Western Europe.
China, Russia, and North Korea share a close alliance. Beijing has consistently been North Korea’s most significant provider of aid and trade, while Mr Kim has been supporting the Russian president in his conflict in Ukraine with troops.
Although the exact dates and duration of Mr Kim’s China visit are unknown, it is set to be his first trip abroad in six years, prior to the pandemic.
This may not be Mr Kim’s last major global summit of the year, as Donald Trump has indicated he is open to another meeting with the North Korean leader later in the year. The two had a historic meeting during Trump’s first term in office.
