Seven members of the medical team that treated Diego Maradona before his death will face trial for homicide in Buenos Aires. Maradona, the famous footballer, died due to a heart attack at his home in the Argentinian capital, while recovering from surgery to remove a blood clot on his brain in November 2020. The case against the healthcare professionals centers on allegations that their negligence contributed to his death. Maradona had struggled with obesity, alcoholism, and drug addiction for many years, but prosecutors believe his death could have been avoided without the negligence of his doctors. Seven of the eight people charged, including Maradona’s brain surgeon, psychiatrist, and nurses, deny wrongdoing but could face up to 25 years in prison. The trial will examine evidence and hear arguments, with the prosecution expected to present a large number of messages and audio recordings. Maradona’s brain surgeon and personal doctor, along with a psychiatrist who prescribed his medications, are among those on trial.
