Miguel Uribe Turbay, Colombian presidential hopeful, seriously injured in assassination attempt | Global Affairs

A Colombian senator and presidential candidate was critically injured in a shooting at a campaign event in Bogota, according to authorities. Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39, was shot during an event in a park in the Fontibon neighborhood. He suffered two gunshot wounds and was seen being helped by aides and bystanders, covered in blood.

Turbay was admitted in a critical state to the Santa Fe Foundation hospital, where he underwent neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedures. Two others were injured, but details about their conditions were not released.

A 15-year-old male suspect was apprehended at the scene, where he was being treated for a leg injury, according to police chief General Carlos Triana. Turbay’s campaign team, which included councilman Andres Barrios, was with him when the shooting occurred; he had announced his bid for president in March, running with the right-wing Democratic Center Party.

Emotions ran high as his wife, Maria Claudia Tarazone, wrote on social media that he is “fighting for his life” and called for prayers. The incident was condemned as an “unacceptable act of violence” by his party, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio decried it in the “strongest possible terms” and urged the current president to “dial back the inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials.”

...
Support for Turbay has been broad, with regional leaders condemning the violence. Gabriel Boric, the President of Chile, stated that “there is no room or justification for violence in a democracy,” while Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa added that they “condemn all forms of violence and intolerance.”
