Minimally four lives lost and numerous individuals reportedly taken captives after Houthi insurgents’ assault causes cargo ship Eternity C to sink in Red Sea | International News

This article reports on an incident in the Red Sea where Houthi rebels attacked and sank a cargo ship known as Eternity C, resulting in at least four deaths and the kidnapping of numerous crew members. Launched on Tuesday, the attack used drones and rocket-propelled grenades from speedboats. Despite efforts by the European Union’s naval mission in the area to rescue people stranded at sea, the fate of 15 crew members remains unaccounted for; overall, 22 crew members, mostly from the Philippines, and a three-member security team were on board at the time of the incident. The vessel did not sink immediately but went under on Wednesday after sustaining damage over two days. The United States Embassy in Yemen has stated that some survivors of the attack were kidnapped by the attackers.
The Houthi group, supported by Iran, has been responsible for over 100 ship attacks since November 2023, framing these actions as part of their effort to support Palestinians.
The Red Sea is a key international waterway for oil and commodities. In a related event on Monday, Israel targeted and struck Houthi-held ports and infrastructure in Yemen, alleging the use of these ports for the transfer of Iranian weapons to conduct terrorist activities against Israel and its allies.
A UN humanitarian official reported that over 17 million people in Yemen suffer from hunger, including more than a million children.
