At least four people have died and numerous others were rescued after a tourist submarine went down in Egypt’s Red Sea, near Hurghada.
These victims were reported to be Russian citizens according to NBC News, which cited the Russian embassy in Cairo.
The submarine, named Sinbad, was carrying 45 passengers—including children who were all Russian nationals, as NBC reported.
The embassy reported to NBC, “On March 27, at approximately 10:00, the Sinbad bathyscaphe, owned by the hotel of the same name, crashed 1 km off the shore. In addition to the crew, there were 45 tourists on board, including minors. All of them are Russian citizens.”
“Most of those on board were rescued and taken to their hotels and hospitals in Hurghada. Their health condition is not a concern. Four people died. The fate of several tourists is being clarified.” the embassy continued.
Local media has it that the group had paid for a sea trip to explore Hurghada’s coral reefs.
Security and emergency services, including 21 ambulances, responded to the incident, according to Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Al-Masry Al-Youm states that the submarine had been conducting tourist trips in the area for several years.
Hurghada is a beach resort town extending around 25 miles along Egypt’s Red Sea coast.
