A truck and bus collision in southern Bolivia has resulted in the deaths of at least 31 individuals, just two days after another crash claimed the lives of at least 37 people. According to the police, the bus traveled approximately 500m (1,640ft) down a ravine following the collision on Monday. The accident occurred on the highway linking Oruro, situated in the Bolivian Altiplano, and the highland mining city of Potosi. The driver of the truck has been detained, and the cause of the crash is currently under investigation. Police spokesperson Limbert Choque reported that there were both men and women among the casualties, with 22 people injured.
President Luis Arce of Bolivia conveyed his condolences for the victims via social media, emphasizing the need for an investigation to establish accountability. He extended his sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and wished them strength during this difficult period. Two further images depict the location of the collision and the wreckage from a previous bus-bus crash on Saturday in the same region. The latter occurred between the Colchani area and the city of Uyuni, which is known for its world-famous salt flats. Bolivia’s under-maintained and poorly supervised roads rank among the deadliest globally, average 1,400 fatalities annually.
