In a tragic event in Paris, an American woman is under detention after allegedly throwing her newborn baby from a hotel window, resulting in the baby’s death. The incident took place at an Ibis Style hotel in the 20th arrondissement early Monday morning, as confirmed by the Paris prosecutor’s office, which shared details with Sky News via NBC News.
The newborn was taken to the hospital immediately but unfortunately did not survive. Officials have identified the mother as an American citizen traveling with a group of young adults in Europe. She received medical attention at a hospital following childbirth and has been placed in police custody there.
According to Le Parisien, the mother is an 18-year-old American student. The newspaper also mentioned that the baby, with the umbilical cord still attached, was found on the ground after the incident.
French authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of this tragic event. The police are also examining whether this case fits the criteria for a “pregnancy denial” situation, where a woman is either uninformed or in denial about her pregnancy until she goes into labor.
The child protection unit of the police is investigating the incident as a homicide of a minor under 15, in addition to considering it a possible “pregnancy denial” case. This condition involves a woman’s unawareness or denial of her pregnancy until the onset of labor.
