South Korea faces devastating wildfires, with at least 27 fatalities | Global Updates

  Wildfires in South Korea have caused at least 27 deaths and injuries to dozens, with thousands of personnel and over 100 helicopters deployed to combat the fires described as the worst in the country's history.

Historic sites, homes, and factories are among the over 300 buildings and structures destroyed. The Korea Forest Service reports that less than 5 millimeters of rain is expected, offering little aid in extinguishing the fires.

Firefighters and others among the dead, with many victims aged 60s and 70s. The fires, suspected to have been caused by human error, have burned over 88,000 acres, the worst figure recorded in South Korea.

Worsening the situation, authorities have not yet disclosed specific details about the civilian deaths. Reports indicate that human error, including fires started while clearing grass from family tombs or sparks during welding work, may have initiated several wildfires.

18:57: Officials from South Korea have confirmed at least 18 deaths due to the forest fires currently sweeping across the southeastern part of the country. Many others are injured, buildings are destroyed, and thousands evacuated due to the unrelenting wildfires. It has been noted as the worst forest fire disaster in the history of the nation.

The wildfires have also injured over 30 people, destroyed approximately 320 buildings, and forced more than 24,200 to evacuate. As of the latest update, authorities are mobilizing over 9,000 people and about 120 helicopters to combat the wildfires.

South Korea faces severe challenges as the wildfires continue to rage, threatening life, property, and heritage sites. The disaster underscores the importance of vigilance and preparedness in the face of such natural calamities.
