South Korea’s highest court vacates the removal of the prime minister from office | Global News

A South Korean court has overturned the impeachment of its prime minister, Han Duck-soo, but has yet to rule on the separate impeachment of president Yoon Suk Yeol. The court overturned Mr. Han’s impeachment, which was initially triggered by his imposition of martial law resulting in a massive political crisis. Following this incident, Mr. Han was also impeached later that month. This unprecedented impeachment sequence intensified domestic division and concerns about diplomatic and economic activities in the country.

Seven of the eight judges at South Korea’s constitutional court dismissed or overturned Mr. Han’s impeachment, leading to his reinstatement as acting leader. The judge who upheld Mr. Han’s impeachment alone would have required the support of at least six justices to remove him from office.

The court has not made a ruling on Mr. Yoon’s impeachment yet. Mr. Han stated, “We will work together to prepare and implement responses to global changes, and to ensure that South Korea continues to develop well in the era of great geopolitical transformation.” The country is facing significant turmoil due to leadership vacancies, divisions caused by massive rival rallies, and criminal charges against top officials.
