Sir Keir Starmer and Volodymyr Zelenskyy have both recognized this as a pivotal moment for European security, especially amid the ongoing conflict between the Ukrainian leader and Donald Trump.
In a phone call today, the prime minister reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine and emphasized his intention to discuss the protection of Kyiv’s sovereignty with the US president.
Sir Keir also spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this morning, and they concurred that Europe must intensify its efforts to bolster collective security across the continent.
Sir Keir is set to meet Mr Trump in the near future, marking a critical moment for U.S.-Europe relations following the American president’s verbal onslaught against Mr Zelenskyy.
Mr Trump labeled the Ukrainian president a “dictator” and castigated the prime minister and French President Emmanuel Macron, both of whom are set to visit the White House next week, for not taking action to stop the war.
Since Russia‘s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the UK, France, and other allies have been furnishing Kyiv with arms and aid.
Mr Trump has also suggested that Ukraine “started” the war.
