Supreme Court appeal unsuccessful as execution of US death row inmate carried out using nitrogen gas as the method of lethality | American News

In a historic event, a Louisiana prisoner has been executed using nitrogen gas, marking the fifth such case in the United States.

Jessie Hoffman Jr was the first individual to face capital punishment in Louisiana in 15 years, with the Supreme Court denying a last-minute effort to halt the execution.

The 46-year-old Hoffman had been convicted of murdering Mary “Molly” Elliott in New Orleans when he was just 18 years old.

Hoffman’s legal team contended that this method of execution was unconstitutional due to its cruelty and unusual nature, but state authorities maintain it is without pain.

Previously executed inmates have exhibited signs of shaking or gasping, symptoms associated with oxygen deprivation, during the nitrogen gas procedure.
