The European Union advises its citizens to prepare for possible emergencies by stocking up on essential items.

According to the European Union, individuals in Europe are advised to stockpile three days’ worth of essentials including food, water, and other supplies in case of a crisis.
Cyberattacks, climate change, and disease have increased the likelihood of an emergency, and the 450 million individuals in the 27-nation bloc should be prepared, according to the EU’s preparedness and crisis management commissioner, Hadja Lahbib.
Announcing a new strategy for managing future disasters, Ms. Lahbib stated that the threats facing Europeans “are more complex than ever and interconnected.”
She emphasized the importance of ensuring that people have essential supplies for at least 72 hours during a crisis.
Items recommended for stockpiling include food, water, flashlight, identification papers, medicine, and shortwave radios.
Ms. Lahbib also highlighted the need for the EU to build up a “strategic reserve” and stockpile critical resources such as firefighting planes, medical and transport equipment, and specialized assets to combat chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats.
“We can no longer rely on ad hoc reactions,” warned Ms. Lahbib.
< The EU is revisiting its defense and security strategies, especially after Donald Trump's administration cautioned that Europe needs to take more responsibility for its own security. In recent years, the union has faced challenges such as COVID-19 and threats from Russia which includes attempts to exploit Europe's dependence on its natural gas to weaken support for Ukraine. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has cautioned that Russia could potentially carry out another attack in Europe by 2030.
France, Finland, and Sweden have already announced similar measures, with Sweden recently updating its Cold War-era civil emergency advice to better align with current security realities.
This update included guidance on how to respond in case of a nuclear attack.
Not all countries have the same level of crisis preparedness, and the EU Commission also aims to encourage better coordination among them in the event of an emergency.
