The captain of the Solong – the container ship involved in the crash in the North Sea – is a Russian national, according to the vessel’s owner.
The rest of the crew on the ship were Russian and Filipino nationals, shipping company Ernst Russ stated.
This comes after police announced that they had made an arrest on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter following Monday’s collision.
Humberside Police confirmed that a 59-year-old individual is in custody for further inquiries. The authorities are investigating the collision between the Stena Immaculate and Solong off the East Yorkshire coast on Monday and are collaborating with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
The tanker, part of the US government’s tanker security program, was operating as a commercial ship that can be contracted to carry fuel for the military when needed. Ship tracking software indicated that the Stena Immaculate was stationary when the Solong crashed into it.
