A prominent US delegation will be visiting Greenland this week amid President Donald Trump’s ongoing threats to annex the strategically significant Danish territory. This delegation is being led by Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President
In response to the potential annexation, Brian Hughes, a spokesperson for the White House national security council, stated that the visit is an opportunity to build partnerships that recognize Greenland’s self-determination and promote economic cooperation. “This is a visit to learn about Greenland, its culture, history, and people, and to attend a dogsled race the United States is proud to sponsor, plain and simple,” Mr. Hughes added.
President Trump has been passionate about the US annexing Greenland since his inauguration on January 20. The strategic location and mineral resources of Greenland would greatly benefit the US, with the territory lying along the shortest route between Europe and North America and playing a crucial role in the US ballistic missile warning system. However, both Greenland and Denmark have voiced opposition to any potential annexation.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen released a statement in response to the visit, stating, “This is something we take seriously.” She emphasized Denmark’s willingness to cooperate with the US, but insisted that such cooperation should be based on “the fundamental rules of sovereignty.”
