The newly-formed government of Syria has established a committee to investigate alleged mass revenge killings targeting a minority group, following calls from the United Nations human rights chief for “swift actions.” The violence has continued for a fourth day in areas loyal to deposed President Bashar al Assad, with over 1,300 reported killed in clashes. Volker Turk, the UN high commissioner for human rights, has urged the interim authorities to protect Syrians by taking necessary measures to prevent violations and ensure accountability. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on Syrian authorities to hold “radical Islamist terrorists” accountable and expressed support for the country’s religious and ethnic minorities. The violence escalated when armed supporters of Syria’s new leaders moved to coastal areas to support the administration’s forces, resulting in revenge killings against Assad’s Alawite sect.
