A man named Kailash has been arrested in India for allegedly raping a British woman at a hotel in Delhi. A second man, Wasim, is also under arrest for his role in attempting to silence the woman and molesting her. The victim had met Kailash online and traveled from London to meet him in India. After meeting in Delhi, the three had dinner and went to the victim’s hotel room, where Kailash is accused of raping her and Wasim is accused of molesting her.
The victim reportedly had trouble communicating with Kailash due to his limited English skills, leading to the use of Google Translate. Both men were taken into custody and are due to appear before a magistrate. The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is providing support to the woman and is in contact with local authorities.
Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated case. An Israeli and Indian woman were also recently allegedly raped in the town of Koppal, Karnataka, while stargazing with their male friends. The attackers pushed the male tourists into a canal, leading to the drowning of one of the men. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged gang rape.
India has been grappling with a significant problem of sexual violence, with a 20% increase in reported rape cases in 2022 compared to the previous year. However, the actual number of incidents may be much higher due to the stigma surrounding such crimes and a lack of trust in the police system.
The 2012 gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old student in Delhi brought attention to the dangers faced by women in the country and sparked widespread protests. In response, the government has enacted new laws, amended existing ones, and increased the severity of punishment for rape. Special courts have been established to try these cases, and the age at which individuals can be tried for rape as adults was lowered from 18 to 16. In 2018, the Indian government also approved the death penalty for those convicted of raping children under the age of 12.
