Donald Trump is considering traveling to Turkey on Thursday for potential peace talks between Ukraine and Russia’s leaders.
The US president, who previously asserted that he could end the conflict in a day, continues to advocate for both sides to meet in order to bring an end to the fighting.
On Sunday, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy challenged Vladimir Putin to meet him in Istanbul on Thursday, but the Kremlin leader has not yet responded.
Speaking on Monday, Mr Trump said: “I am thinking about going over. I don’t know where I will be on Thursday. I have so many meetings.
“There is a possibility of going, I guess, if I think things can be accomplished.”
Mr Trump is currently on a trip to the Middle East, visiting Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.
Mr Zelenskyy supports the idea of Mr Trump attending the talks.
He stated: “I support President Trump’s proposal for direct talks with Putin. I have openly expressed my readiness to meet.
“And, of course, we in Ukraine would greatly appreciate it if President Trump could be present with us at this meeting in Turkey.”
Russia may be stalling for time?
However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, speaking on Monday, declined to confirm who, if anyone, would be traveling to Turkey from the Russian side.
“We are determined to seriously look for ways to achieve a long-term peaceful settlement. That is all,” Mr Peskov said.
