US President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment with Russia while advocating for a peace agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine.
During the weekend, Trump engaged in his first face-to-face meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Vatican, a meeting Zelenskyy described as potentially “historic.” Subsequent to this meeting, Trump questioned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s commitment to peace through a post on Truth Social.
Prior to boarding Air Force One on Sunday, Trump reiterated that the meeting went well and noted that the Ukrainian leader had become “calmer.” He continued, “I think he understands the situation, I think he wants to make a deal,” before addressing Mr Putin and Russia. “I want him to stop shooting, sit down, and sign a deal,” Trump said, expressing his disappointment in the Russian bombings in Ukraine, including in Kyiv where nine people were killed in a Friday airstrike.
However, Trump stated he believes Mr. Zelenskyy is prepared to relinquish control of Crimea, despite the Ukrainian leader’s repeated refusal to do so.
