Turkish Student’s Deportation Suspended, Judge Rules in U.S. | American News

A judge in the United States has ruled against the immediate deportation of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish doctoral student who was detained by immigration officials after voicing support for Palestinians. Ozturk, 30, was apprehended near her home in Massachusetts earlier this week. The arrest by masked federal agents quickly sparked public outrage after a video went viral. A federal judge in Massachusetts issued a temporary order on Friday preventing Ozturk’s deportation for now.

The order reads, “To allow the court’s resolution of its jurisdiction to decide the petition, Ozturk shall not be removed from the United States until further order of this court.”

The Trump administration has reportedly revoked the visas of over 300 students and protesters for their pro-Palestinian activism, drawing criticism from those who argue that the administration wrongly equates support for Palestinian rights with backing for Hamas, which is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.
