Ukrainians have stated to Sky News that their support for Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains unwavering, despite his explosive standoff with Donald Trump.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy had traveled to Washington D.C. intending to finalize a deal on minerals, but left without any agreements following his heated exchange with Trump in the Oval Office.
In front of the world’s media, the final ten minutes of the meeting escalated into a shouting match, with both Trump and his vice president, JD Vance, accusing Zelenskyy of being “ungrateful”.
Trump chastised Zelenskyy as “disrespectful”, while the Ukrainian leader defended himself.
Despite calls from the U.S. for Zelenskyy to step down and call for an election, Kyiv citizens speaking to Sky News expressed solidarity with their president.
Nikita, 30, said, “He is the president, we elected him. So we trust him.”
Despite fears that the recent fallout might lead to the U.S. abandoning Ukraine, Nikita maintains faith in the country’s governance but expressed uncertainty about what the future holds.
“I really hope Europe will wake up and maybe replace U.S. support,”
Nikita stated this sentiment in the city center while pushing his seven-month-old child in a pram. When questioned about Ukraine’s future, despite uncertainties, he remains steadfast, saying if he wasn’t sure about Ukraine’s future, he wouldn’t have stayed.
‘Maybe America has changed its mind’
Alla expressed her disappointment but hoped for the best outcome,
“We were hoping for peace,”
She noted that this morning felt like “everything had changed” but upheld the belief that “Ukraine is strong and will stand. That is our power.”
Regarding the potential withdrawal of U.S. support, Alla hoped that Europe would step in. She also noted that she’s seen many Americans apologizing for Trump’s words, expressing, “I hope Europe will help us. And I think maybe America also changed its mind…”
‘Our president was right’
Svitlana, 52, simply stated, “Our president was right – we have no choice. Of course, we want peace, we want a ceasefire, but Putin will not do that.
“He does not want peace. He wants to continue to totally destroy us.”
She stressed that during the Oval Office meeting, an attack by a drone on medical facilities and other targets in Kharkiv caused injuries to at least five individuals, according to local officials.
