China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, has criticized US tariffs, alleging that they represent a meeting of good with evil.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing during the National People’s Congress, Wang emphasized China’s desire to prevent a return to a “law of the jungle” in the current geopolitical environment.
He also addressed the status of Taiwan, affirming China’s stance that it is an “inalienable part of China” and any attempt to make it independent is “doomed to fail”.
The US President’s Donald Trump‘ policies towards Taiwan remain unclear. His moves towards Russia have raised questions about the US’ support for Taiwan in case of conflict.
China insists that “reunification” with Taiwan is inevitable and may happen by force if necessary. Taiwan, on the other hand, wants to maintain its current status.
While the US officially acknowledges China’s position on Taiwan, it also provides the island with weapons for self-defense.
This has made Taiwan one of the most significant geopolitical flashpoints in the world.
Despite the tension and uncertainty, life goes on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. In southern China, Xiamen is only a few miles from Taiwan’s outlying island, Kinmen.
In the fishing village of Qiongtou, we inquired into how the local community sees the relationship between China and Taiwan.
During a foggy morning when only a few boats ventured out, Mrs Chen was waiting for her husband to return from sea.
“Taiwan is our national territory, ” Mrs Chen stated. “We are the powerful country, and it is beneficial for everyone that Taiwan is part of us.
“Taiwan will only have hope if it is part of our country.”
Last month, Taiwan seized a Chinese ship, accusing it of cutting an undersea cable to the island. Such incidents highlight the potential tensions in this region.
The question remains how the US will respond if tensions escalate.
Despite mixed messages, the US State Department has revamped its Taiwan facts website, omitting the phrase “we do not support Taiwan independence,” which has drawn a strong reaction from China.
