An American influencer, Sam Jones, who triggered outrage by taking a baby wombat from its mother in a video has left Australia. There are concerns about the future of the “disorientated” marsupial, as it may not have been reunited with its parent.
Jones, an “outdoor enthusiast and hunter,” departed the country on Friday following the Australian government’s review of her visa status.
In a deleted Instagram post, she displays catching a baby wombat and then returns it to the roadside. The video has provoked hostility from the public.

Critics are worried that the baby wombat might be left defenseless, possibly with a potentially lethal skin condition known as mange.
Yolandi Vermaak, from the animal rescue group Wombat Rescue, is concerned that the mother might reject the baby after the separation, which wasn’t confirmed on camera. She also points out that the joey has mange and needs immediate treatment.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke have voiced their disapproval of Jones’ actions, with Burke welcoming her departure. The incident involved a common wombat, a protected species found only in Australia.
Attempts to contact Jones for comment were unsuccessful as she had closed her social media channels to messages.
