The Pope is still not out of danger, according to Vatican sources, as his health remains uncertain – but he has had coffee this morning.

In a Saturday morning update, Vatican sources stated that the 88-year-old woke up and was still wearing a non-invasive ventilation mask.

Despite the apparent improvement, sources stressed that the Pope is not out of danger and his clinical conditions remain as complex as they were at the beginning of his two-week health crisis.

In a brief Saturday morning update, Vatican sources stated: “The night passed quietly, the Pope is resting.”

Sources confirmed the Pope had coffee on Saturday morning and is able to eat solid food. When asked if he has eaten, there was no response.

Regarding whether the Pope underwent an invasive treatment during the previous day’s crisis, the Vatican source replied: “It is possible.”

The Pope previously experienced an “isolated” breathing crisis while being treated in hospital for double pneumonia.

An isolated coughing fit, also described as a bronchial spasm, caused the pontiff to vomit and forced him to use an oxygen mask on his nose and mouth for the first time, the Vatican said.

However, he inhaled some of the vomit, leading to “a sudden worsening of his respiratory condition”.

Francis, 88, has been receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli hospital for two weeks. He was treated for an isolated breathing crisis which led to him using an oxygen mask.

The Vatican stated that the Pope remains under “continuous observation” and has “responding well” to treatment.
