Chhaava, a Bollywood action film scheduled for release in 2025 and based on the life of Sambhaji, a Hindu warrior who valiantly fought against the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, is at the center of a controversy that allegedly instigated riots in Nagpur.
Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, recently addressed the Legislative Assembly and highlighted that the film has reignited the public’s animosity towards Aurangzeb. He urged for peace while acknowledging the strong emotions fueled by the movie regarding Aurangzeb.
Aurangzeb, a historical figure of the 17th century, remains a polarizing figure, despised by Hindu nationalists who hold him responsible for the alleged persecution of Hindus during his reign. These claims, however, have been disputed by some historians who argue that these stories have been exaggerated over time.
The controversy surrounding Aurangzeb became a significant issue in the Maharashtra election campaign, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemning the opposition Congress party for idolizing the Mughal ruler.
Aurangzeb’s tomb, located in Aurangabad and renamed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar in 2022, has become the focal point of communal tensions. Hindu leaders and right-wing groups have demanded the demolition or relocation of the tomb.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde drew parallels with the US’s disposal of Osama bin Laden’s body to argue against the glorification of Aurangzeb. The VHP and Bajrang Dal organized a rally seeking the tomb’s removal, during which effigies of Aurangzeb were burned.
False rumors spread on social media about the desecration of the Quran led to communal violence in Nagpur. The unrest underscored the deep polarization between Hindus and Muslims, exacerbated by provocative speeches from political leaders.
Despite efforts to restore order, curfews have been imposed, and arrests made in response to the violence. The situation highlights India’s growing divisions and the distrust between communities under the current government.
Critics argue that the BJP-led government is deliberately creating communal issues to sidestep pressing economic challenges like inflation and unemployment, a situation that is particularly concerning in a state as economically important as Maharashtra.
