A search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has been restarted over a decade after the plane vanished in one of aviation’s most enduring mysteries.
Maritime exploration company Ocean Infinity has resumed the search for the missing plane, according to Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The details of the contract between Malaysia and the firm are still being finalized.
Flight MH370 disappeared from radar shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur airport in March 2014 and has never been found. The search for the plane, which had 12 crew members and 227 passengers on board, is a priority for the families of those who were on the flight.
Malaysia agreed to resume the search in December 2024, with Ocean Infinity conducting the search on a “no-find-no-fee” basis. The search area will cover 15,000 sq km and will last for 18 months. If the wreckage is found and verified, Ocean Infinity will receive $70m.
Australian authorities were not involved in the resumed search, although eight Australians were on board the flight.
The families of those on board are still waiting for answers about what happened to their loved ones. Theories for the disappearance of the plane have ranged from a pilot “gone rogue” to sabotage and conspiracies that the flight was shot down or “disappeared” by a nefarious government agency.
