Three individuals are being sought after a shooting incident at the opening night of a pub in Toronto, which resulted in twelve people getting injured. The shooting occurred at the Piper Arms pub near Scarborough town center on Friday evening at 10:39 pm local time (3:39 am GMT). Initially, authorities reported that six out of the twelve injured individuals sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, although Toronto paramedics stated that some injuries were critical.
Police described the three suspects as males, with one of them wearing a black balaclava and fleeing the scene in a silver car. Authorities are utilizing all available resources to find and apprehend those responsible for the shooting. According to Supt Paul MacIntyre of Toronto’s organized crime enforcement branch, the suspects entered the bar, produced their guns, and opened fire randomly on the people inside.
MacIntyre expressed gratitude that there were no fatalities and described the incident as a “brazen and reckless act of violence” that has deeply affected the community. The motivos for the shooting remain unclear, but police are investigating all leads. MacIntyre also mentioned that while they are open to the possibility of a connection to recent tow truck-related shootings, they are not certain yet.
Mayor Olivia Chow of Toronto expressed her concern over the incident and stated that police are conducting an ongoing investigation. Thoughts and support are being offered to the victims and their families.
The scene was heavily populated with armed police officers, ambulances, and fire engines as the pursuit of the suspects continued into the early hours.
It is worth noting that Canada has a lower rate of firearm homicides compared to the US. According to data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Canada’s rate is at 0.6 per 100,000 people, while the US has a rate of 4.5 per 100,000 people in 2021.
