In eastern France, a knife attack during a demonstration resulted in one person’s death and two police officers suffering serious injuries, as reported by the local prosecutor.
French President Emmanuel Macron has declared this incident as an act of Islamist terrorism.
On Saturday afternoon, a man attacked local police in Mulhouse, shouting “Allahu Akbar,” which translates to “God is greatest” in Arabic. Three additional officers received light injuries, and a bystander was also killed while attempting to intervene.
The suspect, who has been placed on a terrorism prevention watchlist, is currently under arrest. Nicolas Heitz, a prosecutor, confirmed that the list, which tracks individuals to prevent terrorist radicalization, was introduced in 2015 following attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket.
Two of the seriously injured officers sustained injuries to the carotid artery and thorax. The interior minister, Bruno Retailleau, is scheduled to visit the site of the attack later on Saturday.
The attack occurred before 4pm during a demonstration in support of Congo and prompted the police to establish a security perimeter.
According to union sources, the suspect is Algerian and was previously under judicial supervision, house arrest, and an expulsion order from France.
Mulhouse Mayor Michèle Lutz described the incident as an act of horror that has affected the city. However, further confirmation from the judiciary is still pending.
The investigation into this terror attack is now being led by France’s national anti-terror prosecutors unit.
