Nearly half of the “red wall” voters express their disapproval of the government’s handling of benefits-related policies, according to a poll. This highlights ongoing pressure on the government regarding winter fuel payments, disability payments, and the two-child benefit cap. The survey covered 42 traditionally Labour seats that were won by the Conservatives in 2019, with 48% of the voters expressing a somewhat or strongly negative view, compared to 25% who approve. Even Labour voters from the previous election were split, showcasing a 38% rating for both approval and disapproval. The decision to limit the annual winter fuel payment has been particularly contentious among older people, with 12% approving and 60% disapproving. Labour voters are also discontent with the government’s performance in various areas, including the economy, health, and immigration.
