Adelita Grijalva claims victory in Arizona Democratic primary race for House seat | Arizona

Adelita Grijalva emerged victorious in the Democratic House primary in Arizona, set to take over her father’s seat. The election, closely scrutinized as a test of the Democratic Party’s generational divide, saw Grijalva, a 54-year-old and long-serving Pima County supervisor, defeat Deja Foxx, a 25-year-old social media influencer and activist. Raúl Grijalva, Adelita’s father and a long-time congressman representing southern Arizona, passed away from cancer earlier this year, leaving the seventh district seat open. Foxx, known for her activism and focus on government programs under threat from the Trump administration, criticized Grijalva for her “legacy last name,” arguing against the perceived inheritance of political roles. Despite the controversy, Grijalva defended her qualifications, emphasizing her extensive experience in the community. As the district leans heavily Democratic, Grijalva’s primary win effectively guarantees her victory in the general election. The race, however, drew significant attention due to national Democratic infighting over issues of seniority and nepotism, with Foxx receiving support from David Hogg’s PAC, Leaders We Deserve, which is actively targeting incumbent Democrats in primaries.
