The Trump administration has acknowledged and apologized after inadvertently informing some Ukrainian refugees, who were settling in the US as part of the Uniting for Ukraine program, that their visa status would be revoked, requesting them to leave the country. Approximately 240,000 Ukrainians have been settled under this program, introduced during Joe Biden’s presidency. However, according to CBS News, some refugees received misinformation stating that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would terminate their legal protections. The notice, sent by mistake, warned recipients of potential law enforcement actions if they failed to leave, effectively pressuring them to sign up for self-deportation. On Friday, DHS clarified that the Uniting for Ukraine parole program remains active and stated that no action would be taken regarding recipients’ parole status. This created undue panic among the Ukrainian community, fearing they could face similar treatment to Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who were recently targeted for cancellation of their visa programs. The incident also led to a legal challenge, where a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to return a Maryland man, incorrectly deported under the Alien Enemies Act, by Monday. This case underscored the administration’s challenges in handling immigration policies without affecting correctly documented refugees and the importance of due process in deportation proceedings.
