The Australian federal government has announced an investment of $7 billion in Melbourne’s airport train project as part of its efforts to accelerate the development of the long-awaited rail line, which will connect the airport, central business district, and regional Victoria. This new commitment comes on top of the $5 billion already pledged, bringing the total government investment to $7 billion, with the estimated total cost of the project being up to $13 billion. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement, affirming that the Victorian state government has also committed to advance funding for the station. The project, which has faced delays due to disagreements over the route, including debates about an underground section, now has a clear path forward. The federal government previously intervened to mediate the dispute, leading to a resolution that allows the project to proceed without the controversial underground component.

Albanese further stated that the airport rail line is a vital necessity for Melbourne and its residents, emphasizing that it should be both affordable and efficient. The delays have already incurred additional costs, estimated at at least $3 billion. The government is also investing an unspecified amount in the electrification of the Melton train line and has allocated $1.2 billion for improvements in suburban road infrastructure in areas like Beveridge, Carrum, and Cranbourne West.

While announcing these plans, Prime Minister Albanese denied allegations that the investments were politically motivated, aiming to boost his Labour Party’s position in key battleground seats in Victoria, where the opposition Coalition hopes to capitalize on voter dissatisfaction with the current governments. Despite the recent challenges, including a 10% swing against Labour in a state byelection in Werribee, a similar outer Melbourne seat, the government remains committed to investing in infrastructure, including the airport rail link, to better serve the community.
