Albanese Denounces Israel for Alleged Violation of International Law, Yet Refuses to Back Recognition of Palestinian State | Australian External Affairs

Australia currently has no plans to recognize a Palestinian state promptly, according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. He indicated that certain conditions must be met for a two-state solution, despite growing pressure within the Labor party for the government to follow through on its long-standing commitment to this stance.

Albanese also accused Israel of breaching international law by blocking humanitarian aid into Gaza, emphasizing that innocent populations should not be penalized for the actions of Hamas. He stated that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is losing international support due to these actions.

Discussing the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Albanese acknowledged that airdrops of aid would be a starting point, referencing photos of emaciated children suffering from starvation. He emphasized the need to protect civilians, affirming that Australia has consistently called for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

The prime minister clarified that while recognizing a Palestinian state was not imminent, the government would not take this decision as a mere gesture but would consider it as a step forward if appropriate circumstances are present.
