Anthony Albanese is contemplating a snap visit to Europe next week to meet with Donald Trump, following the cancellation of their first meeting at the G7 in Canada. Nato leaders will assemble in The Hague from June 24-25 to discuss the growing Middle East conflict. During a press conference in Kananaskis, Albanese indicated the possibility of joining the talks next week, pending a confirmed meeting with the US President.
Trump and Albanese had planned to discuss Australia’s defense spending and the AUKUS nuclear submarines agreement, as well as Washington’s trade tariffs. However, Trump departed the summit early to address the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
In place of a meeting with Trump, Albanese met with the US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, the US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, and the Director of the US National Economic Council, Kevin Hassett. Albanese stated that he understood Trump’s early departure and was considering visiting Nato in the near future.
The Prime Minister held positive discussions with the Nato Secretary General, Mark Rutte, while in Canada. Alanse also accepted the European Union offer of high-level negotiations on a potential defense and security pact, aiming to strengthen cooperation on global security challenges.
