Allegations emerge that Russia is attempting to infiltrate border security cameras, potentially disrupting Ukraine aid.

Russia’s military intelligence unit, known as APT 28 or Fancy Bear, has been accused of launching a cyber campaign to hack into border security cameras and other systems in order to spy on and disrupt Western aid coming into Ukraine. This effort has been claimed by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and its allies. The group is said to have employed various methods, including hacking into cameras at border crossings, railway stations, and military installations, as well as using phishing emails containing malicious content to gain access to systems. The NCSC has urged private companies providing aid to Ukraine to take immediate action to protect themselves, stating that the hacking would have provided the group with access to the “snapshot” of camera images, as well as sensitive information on shipments. The NCSC advisory also mentioned attempts to use voice phishing to gain access to privileged accounts. The Russian unit has been previously accused of leaking data from the World Anti-Doping Agency and playing a role in the 2016 cyber-attack on the Democratic National Committee in the US.
