The Toxicator, a new ride at Alton Towers themed around toxic waste, had to pause operations on its opening day because of a burst pipe that caused sewage to flood the vicinity.
The ride, which challenges guests with “otherworldly aliens, suspicious scientific experiments, and military might,” was temporarily closed for about an hour on its debut this Saturday after the area was swiftly evacuated.
Alto Towers opened its doors for the 2025 season, which included an evening event, Alton After Dark. The new ride, which was announced in January, attracted many keen fans to the Staffs park eager for a firsthand experience.
Guests had to wait for over an hour to ride Toxicator, which boasts of potential splashes, as warned by its black and yellow caution signs for an “overhead splash hazard.” Reaching heights over 78 feet and capable of serving more than 500 riders per hour, it’s the only “top spin” ride in the world elevated from the ground, viewable by spectators.
Social media was abuzz with reports and reactions to the incident as people mocked the literal interpretation of “toxic substances” when a brown liquid appeared at the ride’s entrance.
One visually documented the murky water flooding the area, joking that the drains had burst, spreading not PSA-generating “toxic substances” but actual sewage.
Alton Towers confirmed that the problem was due to a burst pipe. They assured that they had promptly allowed guests back in after less than an hour, and they lauded their staff for efficiently handling the situation.
“Irony at its best,” commented an onlooker, praising how the park swiftly handled the situation and reopened the ride for the evening.
In a statement, Alton Towers apologized for the inconvenience and thanked its staff for their prompt response to ensure guest safety and enjoyment.
