Amazon’s corporate employees were asked to volunteer their time to assist in the company’s warehouses for grocery delivery as the retailer gears up for its annual Prime Day sale.
An area manager sent a Slack message to thousands of white-collar workers in the New York City area, inviting them to volunteer their time between Tuesday and Friday, in two-hour shifts, for Amazon’s Prime Day schedule.
Volunteers would help with tasks including item picking, preparing carts and bags of groceries for delivery, packing the boxes, and boosting morale by distributing snacks.
Amazon typically hires thousands of extra warehouse workers before its annual Prime Day sale, which offers discounted goods and increased demand for delivery services.
Amazon spokesperson Griffin Buch said this is not the first time “grocery corporate” employees have been invited to volunteer with fulfillment and noted that it allows them to connect with customers and relieve pressure on store teams.
In recent years, Amazon Fresh has struggled to turn a profit on grocery delivery, leading to the closure of several physical locations and layoffs in the segment.
CEO Andy Jassy recently mentioned the future potential use of robots and drones to fulfill and deliver goods at Amazon.
