Russian director Dmitry Krymov, distinguished for his work in Moscow theater and an outspoken critic of the invasion of Ukraine, has made a significant move to bridge cultural divides through a new production in the UK. Noted for his numerous awards and recognition as one of the world’s leading directors, Krymov’s determination to bring together British and Russian performers is part of his effort to combat the isolation caused by geopolitical tensions.

Utilizing two of Charles Dickens’ classics, “Great Expectations” and “Hard Times”, Kryimov aims to create a performance that embodies the shared values and experiences across cultures. Despite being forced into exile due to his criticism of President Vladimir Putin’s actions, Kryimov’s passion for promoting cultural exchanges remains unabated. He sees this collaboration as a means to foster understanding amidst political differences, emphasizing that it’s crucial to avoid boycotting cultural exchanges which could exacerbate nationalist sentiments.

Kryimov’s move to New York and subsequent establishment of an actors’ workshop highlight his commitment to ongoing international collaboration. His presence in London for a screening of “Everyone Is Here,” an adaptation of the American classic “Our Town,” serves as an opportunity for him to engage with British theater talent and to explore the variance in cultural perceptions of theater. Kryimov envisions a medium where theater-goers seek answers and deeper understanding, rather than mere entertainment, hoping that this fundamental human desire remains constant even in turbulent times.
