Australian eSafety has reached out to companies like Twitch, Roblox, Steam, Lego Play, X, and Reddit to determine if the upcoming social media ban for those under 16 applies to them. These companies are currently conducting self-assessments, and eSafety will use the results to decide whether they need to adhere to the ban. eSafety will not publicly list the services that qualify but expects those deemed age-restricted to follow the guidelines. The eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, expressed concern over platforms popular with children being targeted by predators. Roblox, for instance, is implementing stricter age assurance measures to prevent such incidents. The list of companies approached by eSafety includes Meta, Snap, TikTok, YouTube, Match, GitHub, and others. While gaming platforms and dating services like Match were unexpected inclusions, Meta is also piloting an AI system to better detect and manage accounts of underage users on Instagram.
