AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION PROBES DEFENSE REPORTER FOR POSSIBLE NON-DISCLOSURE OF GERMAN SHIPBUILDER FUNDED TRAVEL

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is currently investigating allegations that their defense correspondent, Andrew Greene, filed a story about a German ship builder without disclosing his trip to Germany funded by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, who are in competition for Australian navy contracts. The report, which has since been removed, was part of a story on the flourishing business at German shipyards. The ABC stated that these are serious allegations and that they have strict editorial policies that wouldn’t tolerate such behavior.

As a public broadcaster, the ABC doesn’t typically accept travel paid for by the subject of a report due to potential conflicts of interest. The ABC is keeping tight-lipped about the outcome of the investigation to preserve due process and confidentiality. Greene, who has been with the public broadcaster since 2010 and has been a prominent defense correspondent for the past decade, had also been on another trip funded by the Foreign Press Centre Japan, which was disclosed in his reports. Other journalists, such as Matthew Knott from The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, who went on an international press junket to Germany courtesy of TKMS also disclosed their travel arrangements.
