In recent news, Australian domestic spy agency, ASIO, has concluded that Iran was responsible for at least two attacks targeting Australia’s Jewish community, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese calling the attacks “extraordinary and dangerous acts.” According to Albanese, ASIO has obtained “credible intelligence” that connects the Iranian government to these attacks on the Adass Israel Synagogue of Melbourne and Lewis’ Continental Kitchen.
ASIO is presently investigating other incidents of anti-Semitism in the country for potential ties to the Iranian government. The agency’s director-general, Mike Burgess, made it clear that while Iran was not behind every anti-Semitic incident in Australia, they could not rule out their involvement in some cases. Burgess also confirmed that no Iranian diplomats in Australia were involved in these attacks, as they were orchestrated by the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) through a network of facilitators and coordinators based overseas.
In response to these findings, the Australian government will be expelling the Iranian ambassador to Australia, Ahmad Sadeghi, and suspending the operations of their embassy in Tehran. Furthermore, Australia has decided to list Iran’s IRGC as a terrorist organization. Both Prime Minister Albanese and Burgess have condemned Iran’s actions, citing that they pose a risk to public safety, instill fear in the community, and disrupt the social fabric.
